"I was struck by the extremely high quality of our professors"

I was born in France听and听joined the French army in 1997. I鈥檝e听moved eight times since听then, including听to听French Guyana,听where my family spent two intense years听in one of the most beautiful locations in France. I鈥檝e also been deployed听on many occasions, to places like听the Balkans听and听Afghanistan.听

I decided to apply听to BT天堂鈥檚听MA program in International Affairs听after I鈥檇 graduated听from the military staff course at the听Ecole听de Guerre. I wanted to take a break from the military and widen my vision of geopolitics, while participating in a demanding听American educational experience听and听a听multicultural environment.听I have to听give听especial听thanks to听Professor Susan Perry听for her tireless guidance, as she helped me听find classes that best corresponded to what I听wanted听to learn and achieve,听including听Professor Philip Golub鈥檚 鈥淧hilosophical Theory of International Relations鈥, Professor听Ziad听Majed鈥檚听鈥淐onflicts in the Middle East鈥, and听a module taught by Sean Casey, an amazing BT天堂 alumnus who works with the International Medical Corps, called听鈥淣GO Finance Management鈥.听听

This program was the first (and maybe the last) time I was immersed in a fully civilian and totally diverse group of people.

I was听struck by the extremely high quality of our professors, who听were always available to speak with us, the richness of the classes, and the mix of profiles among the students. While听my core courses gave me an in-depth understanding of听International Affairs,听and the opportunity to听observe听my career听from a global perspective,听I was also able听to听explore other academic interests, including听political philosophy with听Professor Cynthia Fleury听and听Arabic.听Being at BT天堂 was an extraordinary experience.听听听

I still keep in touch with my professors and treasure听my听friendships with听the听inspiring people I met here, including a friend who helped me submit my thesis while听I听was deployed in Mali and had limited Internet access. This program was听the first (and听maybe听the last) time听I was immersed in a fully civilian and听totally diverse听group of people. I was the only French student, the only person in the military, and one of the oldest participants in the program and听I felt that each of us drew from our singular backgrounds to provide听lessons听in life and learning to the others.听听

I听now work in听the听Paris听headquarters听of听the French armed forces as a military assistant to the general听who advises the Chief-of-Staff on issues of听military听international affairs. It鈥檚 an exciting job听for which I rely on the skills that I acquired and developed at BT天堂 almost every day.听听

I鈥檇 like to end with one of my favorite听BT天堂听memories.听We鈥檇 put together听a student review group to prepare for exams and had all become friends. On a day that we didn鈥檛 have an exam,听I brought some French cheese and wine, and we听stayed听late,听eating,听and听talking about听what we鈥檇 learned, where we鈥檇 come from, and what we hoped to do next. I hope we鈥檒l all meet again soon.
