About General Nicholson

In over 36 years of active duty, General Nicholson has been widely admired as a uniquely skilled 鈥渨arrior-diplomat鈥�. He is the longest-serving commander of the Afghan War, having led the 41-nation NATO-led Resolute Support Mission and United States Forces-Afghanistan for two and a half years. His six years in Afghanistan make him one of America鈥檚 most combat seasoned four star generals.听 His leadership and close relations with Afghan leaders were key to brokering the first ceasefire in the 18-year war and helped enable the launch of the current peace initiative.听

General Nicholson teaches leadership at Harvard University and the US National Defense University (NDU) specializing in adaptive leadership in high complexity and risk.听 He has been awarded France鈥檚 Legion D鈥橦onneur, Germany鈥檚 Knight Commander鈥檚 Cross, and Afghanistan鈥檚 Amir Aminullah Khan Medal among numerous other awards.听 He is a graduate of West Point and Georgetown University and has masters degrees in National Security Studies (NDU) and Operational Art from the School for Advanced Military Studies. General Nicholson is President of the PENFED Foundation which helps US service members, veterans, their families and supporters with life鈥檚 financial challenges and opportunities.
